The hill on which the church stands has a history of habitation going back over 10,000 years. About 2,500 years ago Iron Age settlers constructed a hill fort, later used by Romano British.
There may have been a Saxon church site probably of wood. In 1978 it became a chapel of ease in the Parish of Glossop.
